In 1991, Kawai announced that they would be designing and building a mid-priced piano for Steinway & Sons based on a collaboration between the two companies. A year later, Steinway announced the Boston piano line. Built in the Kawai factory, the piano features designs by both companies and a higher price tag than comparable Kawai pianos. These instruments were designed to be distributed through Steinway & Sons dealerships as a "second tier" to Steinway pianos themselves. Over time, Boston has undergone a number of redesigns and price increases... but it remains a limited distribution product available only in authorized Steinway dealerships.
